What’s In Bloom—May 13th

After the warmer temps of the past few weeks spring has fully sprung. With it, the first of the season’s wildflowers have emerged. It’s hard to believe there was snow on the ground three weeks ago, but such is life in Northwest Indiana. Here are a few treats from my corner of the Dunes.

Anemonella thalictroides (Rue Anenome)

Anemonella thalictroides (Rue Anenome) thrives in the dappled shade of a mesic woodlot within the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Viola pedata lineariloba (Bird's Foot Violet)

Viola pedata lineariloba (Bird’s Foot Violet) is a characteristic plant of sandy Black Oak savannas. Dune Acres, Indiana.

Pedicularis canadensis (Wood Betony)

Pedicularis canadensis (Wood Betony) is frequent in prairie remnants, but here it is growing on a roadside in a Black Oak savanna. Dune Acres, Indiana.

Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold)

Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold) is blooming along the east and west side of Mineral Springs Road, north of Route 12, in the the Cowles Bog Wetland Complex. Dune Acres, Indiana.

Phlox bifida (Cleft Phlox)

Phlox bifida (Cleft Phlox) gets its name from the notches in its petals. This plant has white blossoms, but others in the vicinity are blushed with light purple. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Stylophorum diphyllum (Celandine Poppy)

I was told by Barbara Plampin that the small population of Stylophorum diphyllum (Celandine Poppy) on the west side of Mineral Springs Road was probably imported from the Valparaiso Moraine. Dune Acres, Indiana.
