Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (BEARBERRY)

The range of our native bearberry is really interesting. It extends across the continent in the northern tier of states, but is found as far south as Arizona and New Mexico out west. In any event, it is a rugged and indispensable evergreen ground cover for dry, sandy conditions. In the Great Lakes region, it grows on sand dunes, just back from the sandy beach, and in open woodlands. The flowers are circumspect and give way to red berries by fall.
