Asclepias exaltata (WOODLAND MILKWEED)

This is an uncommon, shade-tolerant milkweed that also goes by the common name, poke milkweed. It thrives in rich-soiled savannas and open woodlands where it can sometimes be found in sizable colonies, though a plant here and a plant there is more typical. An old name, Asclepias phytolaccoides, suggests it’s superficial resemblance to our native common pokeberry (Phytolacca americana). Poke milkweed is, however, a much more well-behaved and refined plant. If you crave milkweed, but lack the full-sun conditions required by most species, woodland milkweed is a wonderful alternative.
