Fringed Gentian is undoubtedly one of our most stunning native wildflowers. It grows in wet to mesic prairies, often those that are sandy and calcareous. The literature notes it as low-growing, up to about 12″, but I’ve seen robust clumps that were perhaps three-feet tall. A biennial, plants will form a low rosette of foliage in the first year and flower the following year, generally in very late summer and into fall.
